THE LUNAR CODEX / ARTISTS ON THE MOON [AOTM] announces that the 76 artists from the curated exhibit 'Shelter' are joining "The Nova Collection" time capsule!

Done in collaboration with 33 Contemporary Gallery and PoetsArtists platform, 'Shelter' curated by Dr. Samuel Peralta was an exhibit in direct response to the global pandemic, seeking works that evoked shelter, solace, safety. No terrestrial catalogue exists of 'Shelter' - it exists exclusively as part of a lunar edition nickel time capsule headed for the Nova-C lander launching via SpaceX on January 2022. Delivery will be by Astrobotic’s Peregrine Lunar Lander, through NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. NASA awarded the flight contract to Astrobiotic, and the mission will mark the first-ever commercial trip to the moon. The Lunar Lander will also transport experimental equipment tasked with gathering data to pave the way for astronauts, including the first woman in history to travel to the moon in 2024 as part of the Artemis program. In Greek mythology, the goddess Artemis is the twin sister to god Apollo. NASA’s Apollo 11 mission made history as the first crewed mission to the moon in 1969. Fittingly, the Lunar Codex will also be the first time women’s art is going to the moon. Currently, the only paintings inhabiting the lunar surface are artworks by six prominent mid-century male artists. Delivered in 1969, the paintings, including one by Andy Warhol, are etched on a ceramic wafer and represent the abstract expressionism movement. As the first commercial mission and the first women’s art to land on the moon, the Lunar Codex and the larger Artemis program honor the past while transitioning space travel into an exciting new era. Other exhibitions and publications curated by Didi Menendez and other guest curators are also moon bound including “Facing the Universe: the Cosmos Within” which was serendipitously titled before knowledge of the project existed. The centerpieces of Dr. Peralta’s payload are the 21 volumes of his own Future Chronicles anthologies, all Amazon bestsellers, and 15 PoetsArtists art magazines and exhibition catalogs, one of which he helmed as guest curator for publisher and art curator Didi Menendez. Each individual volume provided scores of curated contemporary art and short stories for the time capsule. Together with other art books, anthologies, novels, music, and screenplays - including for the short film Real Artists, which won an Emmy® Award in 2019 - he and his colleagues have digitized literally thousands of art and fiction for the trip to the Moon.
